ONCE
'ONCE' was Dublin's first ever exhibition of fetish-related imagery, and my first solo show in the Republic of Ireland. I'd shown elements of this work in my degree show at Napier Polytechnic of Edinburgh.
Leaning on my documentary past I'd taken moments in time as my theme for the work, using phrases like 'Once upon a time....', 'Once in a lifetime' and 'Once I was....' to establish the concept of narrative within this piece. Certainly in Ireland at the time not many people had any idea that such behaviour existed and even fewer would have said that they were involved.
For that reason the notion of possessing, or owning, this experience entered the work. I usurped male power icons; the church, justice, guns and cars by placing them in the hands of my female subjects.
Parts of this show later found their way to London where they were exhibited in the Association of Erotic Artists' group show and at CoffeeCake&Kink in Covent Garden.
